The exhibition CITY – CHRONICLES OF URBAN SPACE has the goal to explore and present different modalities and organizational forms of a city’s culture of living, on the examples from museum collections.
The notion of city as a theme is exceptionally represented in the Yugoslav 20th century art, starting from the notions that abandon the idealized landscape and historic compositions and turn towards direct contact with the surrounding on the one hand, to the notion of city in the function of a critical review of contemporary life and products of mass consumption of modern civilization on the other hand. Through these processes, it is possible to perceive the development of this theme from the notion of city as an artistic inspiration to the notion of city as an aesthetic-critical dimension of public space.
The exhibition will present about forty-five artworks from different authors: Sava Sumanovic, Beta Vukanovic, Milena Pavlovic-Barili, Petar Lubarda, Pedja Milosavljevic, Mihail Petrov, Milan Konjovic, Kosta Hakman, Cuca Sokic and others. The selection of works is focused on specific phenomena and cultural models adequate to the nature of city environment, as well as on different aspects of presentation of a city. Through artworks represented at this exhibition it is possible to trace the development of urban spaces, as well as their symbolic sides, the relationship between the categories urban-rural, the existence of downtown and suburbs, the status of individual and collective identity, the coexistence of numerous different social and cultural phenomena.
