Art Documentation Department
Art documentation department gathers, prepares, categorizes and stores professional literature (books, catalogues, periodicals, electronic editions), daily press, archive material and photo documentation from the field of visual arts, especially modern and contemporery international, Yugoslav and Serbian art. Thanks to the systematic gathering of matherial which followed the forming of various collections and the MCA exhibition activity, the department is now in possesion of the finest and most complete documentation, including all the material about both the art and artists from the territory of ex-Yugoslavia. Another assignment of the department is the preparation of all the necessary material for exhibitions, catalogues and programmes of MCA. Regarding the scope, the thoroughness and the quality of the fund itself, the department represents a local reserch-documentation centre of great importance for the studying of the 20th century art. Therefore, it is open to experts, students, artists and many others for their research work.
The documentation department is open for the professional public, weekdays from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, except Tuesdays, if announced in advance.
Library
The library contains 4.900 books from local and foreign authors on art history and theory, contemporary art, philosophy, esthetics, architecture, design, film etc. It possesses the collection of 14.000 catalogs of local and international exhibitions, and about 380 issues of Yugoslav and foreign professional periodicals, dating from 1900 until the present. The library’s special editions from the beginning of the 20th century are considered a bibliographic rarity today. It’s contents are updated on a daily bases by purchasing, exchange, and public donations.
Hemeroteque
Hemerotheque contains newspaper documentation of about 200.000 excerpts which relate toYugoslav and Serbian artists, exhibitions, events, art critique, institutions etc. Newspaper excerpts appear as part of subject entries and artists’ files.
Visual documentation
The photo documentation archive comprises photographs, negatives, contact-copies and slide pictures of the works from the collections of MCA, as well as a large video collection documenting the exhibitions, the openings and the museum displays, and other important events in relation to the activities of this institution. The photo documentation also archives the photographs especially made for the needs of the conservation department, and the exhibitions and events outside MCA.
